I replaced the In-tank fuel pump this weekend. This installation went fine. However, while the cover was off in trunk, I took to time to look around. I have a fuel leak! So I changed the soft hoses from the sending unit thinking they were bad.
I have owned the car for 5 years now and have always noticed a fuel smell when I fill the tank up. Sometimes the smell would be more noticeable than other times. I found that if I filled up the tank until the nozzle stopped, it would not smell. If I squirted in a little extra the smell would be terrible. Much of the rubber turned to tar undercoating is wet. There is no visible squirting of fuel from the fuel lines. I know the fuel is evaporating, leaving the gooey mess. I have wiped up as much of it as I can but it is quite hard given it’s sticky composition.
Question is, is there any history of 940 tanks cracking or leaking? The apparent leak does come from high up on the car/tank.
