Top Strut Nut 200

I am having a problem removing the top strut nut because the spring on the strut is broken. Everytime I turn it with the removal tool from IPD, the whole assembly turns with it. It is so tight that trying to use a wrench to hold the top notch above the strut slips out and is starting to strip it. Is there any tricks here?
