I sometimes get a clunking noise when moving forward, after backing up. On rare occasions, it makes the same noise when accelerating at around 20 MPH, after letting off the throttle for a bit.
The sound seemed like, either the rear end was shifting slightly due to a loose rear end support stay bolt, or worn support stay bushing, or like the drive shaft bolts were loose.
Checking under the car, I found them all tight, but there seemed to be excessive play in the center support bearing rubber bushing. It moves side to side, or up and down by at 1/4 inch. It's only got 30,000 miles on it since the bearing and bushing were replaced, but this is a V8 conversion, so it gets a lot of torque.
How much lateral play is normal for the center support bushing?
I get the impression that the bushing can be replaced fairly easily, without removing the bearing from the driveshaft. Is that true?
