Position of wagon tailgate pistons 700

While in the scrap metal/auto salvage yard this afternoon I saw a wagon with the tailgate pistons facing the opposite way that mine do--the larger part of the piston was up with the gate fully open. They can be installed either way--which way is correct? Does anyone have specs on this, or a real original car?
