Position of wagon tailgate pistons 700

Now you have me thinking. The gate on my wagon SLAMS down. The pistons hold the weight of the gate just fine, but offer no resistance to the closing of the lid. Maybe I will try mounting them upside down to see if that makes any difference. I have been meaning to post the question about the slamming down of the tail gate for a while.

92 745 8 valve just rolled over 150,000 and running strong.
