Instrument cluster flickering 200 1989

A question about my 1989 245. Why do the instrument cluster lights flicker and the turn signal indicators glow brighter when my headlights are on? Also, the temp gauge rises to the red zone when all this is occuring. Oh, and the high-beam indicator glows bright too!!! No other lights do this. Help!!
This is my first brick and I don't think working on it could be any harder than my german Chevrolet (BMW) or the Jag.
By the way, this is an excellent site- one of the best I have seen.
