Hey all,
Our 94 945 kept having a problem with the horn ground in the steering wheel. Basically, every time I would clean the ground in the middle of the steering wheel it would work for about a week, then need cleaning again. Not wanting to replace the ring switch for the horn since I don't think that it is even bad, I came up with this simple solution. Since the ground to the horns is bad, not the +12V to the horns, I installed a new relay in the following manner:
1. Plug in one set of the existing horn wires to power the relay coil.
2. Add a ground wire to a good location on the chassis, then plug the other end of this ground wire to one switched end of the relay.
3. Create a new wire that connects the other switched end of the relay to the ground side of the two horns.
4. At the remaining set of horn wires, tape off the ground since it is not used and split the +12V side into two terminals and plug these into the +12V horn inputs.
I like this approach because it does not require adding any additional fuses, it simply lets the horns use a different (better) ground. I hope this helps someone and that it is not a repeat (didn't find anything about this in the FAQ or searching posts.) The only bad aspect to this mod that I can see is that you now have yet another relay to worry about breaking...
