Keyless Entry S90-V90

I have a 1998 S90 and the keyless entry stopped working recently. I have replaced the batteries and attempted to reprogram, but it is dead. No response from the car. Before I take it to the dealer and spend lots of bucks, I was wondering if anybody ad some ideas I could try. Can I buy a brand new transmitter and reprogram it to see if that is the issue? If it didn't solve it, I could return the transmitter. Any other ideas?
