Sputter, near stall - what's up with that? 200 1989

Hey guys,

Here's what I got.

'89 240 w/ 241k miles

All going ok until other night. Coming down a steep long highway hill, doing about 75, put gas pedal down, and got...backfire and sputtering.
Engine power cut dramatically, with no acceleration.
Tank was about 2/3rd's full
Got to bottom of hill where I thought car would stall, and it didn't when I reapplied gas.
At the time, cell ph was charging through cigarette lighter.

Had similar event today doing ~75 along a flat stretch of highway. No cell phone charging this time. Also, had put a pint of dry gas in before I left.

It's like the engine had to rev down before the engine could take gas.

One other thing, not sure if it is related - the temp gauge for coolant is almost always just above the bottom line.

Will be filling up with premium in about half an hour.

Don't have a clue if it is the pump(s), the fuel filter, bad gas, in need of a tune up, circuit problems, ....

Appreciate any help/advice you can offer,
"Blue Brick"
