Weird battery response in 83 DL 200 1983

I went to start my car this morning and got nothing. No headlights, no clock and certainly no start. Upon trying to jump the battery, sparks flew just from connecting the cables. Sparks and smoke were coming from the cable and the battery never did anything but give half a turn. The AAA guy that was jumping it said "weird electrical problem". Should I take it to a mechanic?
