my '92 244 begins to make a metallic rattling noise at high rpms, and my mechanic has diagnosed it over the phone as a potential predetination problem. the problem occurs when the engine is running at higher rpms in all gears, and the metallic rattling seems to correspond to the movement of the pistons (read: it goes really fast). at highway speeds (60-75mph), the noise doesn't occur when i'm just cruising along. however, when i put on the gas to either pass someone or when going up a big hill, the ringing/rattling starts and won't stop until i let off the gas.
any thoughts on what this problem is? if it sounds like predetination, what is that, and what's the process to get it repaired? lastly (and most importantly), how much to repair it and can it be something that i wait to repair until the pocketbook is thicker?
many, many thanks.
