How hard is it to replace an O2 sensor? 200 1980

I find out today that the O2 sensor in my '80 245 is probably bad. I don't think it's been changed more then once (maybe twice) in 419K miles.

When I unpluged it, the car leaned out... almost wanted to stall. The idle is also acting kind of strange.

I was at a local Volvo shop where I do some side work (computer stuff, not mechanical... yet...), and I had them take a look at it. Ran an emissions test, and verified that the O2 sensor is probably no good anymore.

Question: Do I need a Volvo O2 sensor for some $70, or will a generic one from a VW shop for a few dollars work?

Where exactly is the O2 sensor at? I could see the wire going somewhere under the car, but couldn't tell after that.

Thanks, as always.
