Hello everyone, new to the board but have been reading for a while. I own an S80 which I'm really happy with and originally tuned in for information about it, but kept reading about this indestructable 240 and so decided to keep my eyes open, just for the hell of it. I sell real estate, and was called about a month ago to appraise a property owned by an 85 year old gentleman who had recently passed away. I go in the garage and there is a 1988 244 in what looks like really nice condition. He was the original non-smoking owner, every single service record with no maintenance ever missed, car looks like new inside and out, 77,000 miles. Car drove pretty nicely, but the son was apologetic because he thinks the air conditioning doesn't work. Bummer. I asked him how much he wanted and he said he just placed the ad no more than an hour before, and was asking $2,900, but figured it was worth $2,600. I bought it. After checking all the records it appears that the mileage is legit, and that the old fellow drove only 14,000 miles in the last 5 years. I took it to a mechanic who is known for doing good work on volvo's and he said it's one of the nicest he had seen in years. I had him change all the fluids and do some miscellaneous work (seat had a broken spring, etc) which cost about $400 and now I'm driving a really nice (albeit 16 year old) car. My wife, however thinks the ride is a little rough, and my german mother-in-law thinks it rides like "a panzer!" In any event, I decided to order new snow tires for it, and ordered the 185/75-14 size instead of the standard 185/70-14 because I think the extra height would give me a bit greater ride cushion. Is this true, or is it a bad idea? Would the extra height rub in the wheel well somewhere? Thanks, Fred
