Battery charging 700 1986

Hello I have a 1986 volvo 740 GLE and it has the bosch alternator and as the ignition is switched off the battery light stays on as I'm switching off and goes out when key out. Is this normal? I have tightened the belt and checked the wiring and fitted a new battery as the old one was old. Thanks for your help James.
