On day four with our bargain purchase 85 244. After its first night sitting
outside at 6000ft elev. the little battery with no name gave out. It must
have been down to 20 degrees or so which is common for winter. I grabbed
a National just because it was convenient. Given more time I'd have done
otherwise. The new battery doesn't fit in the car very well.
I'm wondering what's up with this brick. It's about as slow as our 89 245 5spd
through the first few gears but then it pulls noticeably better even in OD. The
244 easily reached 95 mph on my way home the other night. I ran out of road
before the car showed any strain. I had an 84 242 and don't remember it being
this peppy. Idle seems to be set too high though. It hovers around 1,100 rpm
while at rest. The tach is nice to have. This is the first Volvo we've had with
one.
I dialed up the Tire Rack and had them send out four new 14" steel wheels
mounted and balanced with Blizzaks. Interested to see if the late 240 caps
fit on TRs steal wheels. If so I'll be getting a set of 14" Volvo caps.
As mentioned in another thread, next up is an economical stereo CD and a couple of speakers. The head needs to be all black faced with a twist knob for volume. Rockford Fosgate has a nice looking unit but it seems to be over $250. Maybe Blaupunkt as one forum member suggested, if they still have volume knobs.
Cheers,
Ron
