I'm trying to track down an oil leak and wanted to clean the engine with Gunk. Any special precautions while doing this?

I'm losing about a quart every 500-600 miles and have noticed a lot of oil on the large brace the runs side to side behind the oil pan. I know it's probably a bit premature to find out exactly where the leak is coming from without cleaning, but any thoughts appreciated.
