240 overdrive issue 200

i recently acquired an 87 240 wagon with an automatic...the over drive light comes on randomly, and often when i start the car the over drive whines until i push the button and it stops...about 30% of the time it actually will go into overdrive on the highway...

is the solenoid dead?...

im not even sure what the normal operation should be like, but i assume that you drive until you want the overdrive, push the button, it engages and the light comes on...that sound right?
