Overdrive Preventive Maintenance? 200 1982

I have an M46, Laycock Type J. I couldn't find anything on the FAQs about preventive maintence. How long do these overdrives typically last? What preventive measures (eg seals, o-rings) should I do and how often? I live in a hilly area.

Also, can I remove an overdrive and still drive the brick?
Can I install an overdrive in an M45?
