Oil leak worsened in the cold... 700 1988

We experienced our first real cold snap in New Orleans this week. I had a small oil leak before that seemed to be coming from the top of the motor oil reserve and spilling out over the engine. This oil started smoking when the car finally warmed up and small puffs of white smoke came up. I do need to change the flame trap, but I can't think of other causes to look for. I have meticulously changed the oil every 3000 miles since I bought this 88 745 GLE non-turbo with 111,000k on it. Please help brickboard.
