'dunk' in the differential 200 1989

I drive my 89 244 hard and have made it do things an old volvo should not do - especially one with an automatic transmission. Anyway, for the most part (99% of the time) I dont over do it. Over the months however I have begun to notice a soft "dunk" (heard and felt) comming from the rear when I accelerate from a standstill. Its not the transmission but is most definitly comming from the drive train. Seems to me that it would be the differential. Does anyone know what this could be and how serious it is? Did I perhaps strip a tooth off a gear or could something be sticking? The car drives great (except for that stupid overdrive relay) but I want to make sure that Im not destroying my car's drivetrain.
