Just installed a new snow tire and wheel package I got from Tire Rack this week and don't ya know I got to test them the first weekend on. The tires are called Winterforce, a new product by Firestone. They arrived pre-mounted and balanced on new steel wheels and with cool oversized chrome lug nuts all for $360 for 4 shipped. I got 195-75-14s for the 245. I have to say, this set rocks. I haven't had real snows in a long time, and what a differnce. The wagon has always had better than average traction, but with these tires and a 90# steel weight in the rear cubby, last night's 12" of snow was no match. I went to camp this morn. Camp sits on top of a 200' long hillclimb that turns left, and like I said, 12" of fresh snow. My first attempt was in 1st gear - half way up and no more. Next time I got a good start and grabbed 2nd just before the climb and sank the pedal. I felt 20 years younger as it swang sideways rooster-tailing on the way up. Got to the top and cracked a 180 for the entertainment of the camp boys and their 4x4 pickups. My new name - Joey Chitwood. The 245 is now the Sport Utility Volvo. Also, this tire/wheel set made the car look like a mean rally car. The wheels are grey and have 5 diamond holes and they look sharp with the new nuts, and even better considering they were only $36 each. The 75s raised the car not quite an inch over the 70s, though it feels much higher - it even seems to be easier to get into the car now. The tire whirring noise is not bad at all, just enough to let you know they are snow treads, and they help put the kids to sleep (just like when I was a kid in dad's '69 Dodge with it's snows on!). I recommend this tire and wheel deal to anyone who drives in snow. Also, after today, I'm a firm believer in having a good belly pan on, as it really did help the car plow over deep snow. Next step - Detroit Trutrac and figuring out how to get a little bit of suspension lift. I got the fever now. -Newpie in Central PA
