Brake lights: replace one, the other stops working...what the ???? 700 1989

I had been driving for a month with a burnt out tail light. I finally stopped in and picked up a pair of replacement bulbs so I could do both sides at the same time. The passenger side was out, so I started there. When I pulled out the old bulb, the filiment was broken. I put in the new one and then went over to the other side to replace that one too. Both filiments were fine on the drivers side. Cleaned up, then tested. The passenger side lit up beautifully, but the driver side was out now. Huh? Maybe I hit a wire, or something. So, I removed it, checked to make sure that everything was making contact, checked the wires, and put it all back. Still out. Pulled it again, put in the old bulb. Still out. So, now I still have a car with a brake light out, but I have no idea why.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
