general exhaust questions: why the noise 200

I was chatting with my friend at work and he asked an interesting question about his car:

why does his car making this " bum..bum..bum.....bum...bum....bum" noise after releasing the gas pedal on the freeway.

I have heard this from many other cars also, always while decelerating from high RPMs. It's similar to reving up the engine and after releasing the gas pedal, you hear the " bum..bum......bum".

I think it's incomplete combustion; that some unburnt fuel is send down the exhaust. But why? How would you adjust when it's a fuel injected system?
