Got an unhappy noise when pulling the cluster from an 84 in the pick 'n pull. I had all the fasteners undone, and was gently (then a little more firmly) pulling the cluster toward me to get at the wiring connectors and the speedo cable, when "Crack" - and it came free and popped toward me a few inches.
Examination showed that the black plastic connector that holds the speedo cable to the housing had broken...half was on the cable (slid down it into the darkness) and half on the speedo housing.
So before I pull the cluster in our 81 to replace it with this one, what's the technique for avoiding my previous goof? Can you access it from below and unscrew? And - come to think of it - are the cable fasteners the same (81 and 84) so that I can connect the 81 cable to this speedo? Thanks!
