strut problems 200

I have had a couple of problems since doing struts on my 89 240 wagon. On the passenger side the spring was rubbing inside the wheel well and springing back making a clunk when I would turn the wheel back. I dont know why it was rubbing since I marked the strut on top and lined up the marks again. I had to lower the strut again and move it about a 1/2 in on the marks so the spring wouldnt rub anymore. Did I do the right thing? My alignment is probably a mess but it doesnt rub. Any other way to do this w/o moving the marks? Do I need new springs? On the left side I get a clunk when going over bumps that is really bad. I checked tie rods and ball joints and they are tight. I tightened the gland nut on the strut and I think the top strut nut is tight--down about 5 threads on the bolt(I used an impact wrench) All I can think is that my springs are bad. The car is alot bouncier on this side than the other--using the bumper bounce test. I put in new boge turbogas struts so they should be fine- new strut bearings as well. Any help would be appreciated. I spent alot of money and my car drives worse than before ouch! Phil
