How serious iscurb-rash damage to aluminum rims? 700 1989

Happy Ano Nuevo!!
I just installed a set of 10-spoke Volvo 760 aluminum rims (redone nicely with silver wheel paint) and a set of 195/60 Kumho touring tires. Two of the rims have 4 inches or so of deep curb rash (the lip is missing). I mounted these on the rear.
Does this damage pose a safety hazard?
Should I go back to the OEM steel rims/hubcaps?
