headlights wouldn't work this morning, but high beams worked just fine 200 1987

Here's the story of my latest problem:

I was leaving this morning for my first day of work at a new location. I started my car, and turned on the lights. Everything worked fine at this point. Got to the top of my road, turned on the high beams. Once again, everything was fine. Got to the main road and turned, then turned off the high beams for a passing car, and NOTHING. I stopped to check a few miles down the road after blinding several people, and the regular headlights just weren't on. The parking lights worked just fine, and the high beams worked just fine. The red lights on the back of the car were still working, too. I drove the rest of the 45 minute drive using a combinaiton of high beams and fog lights. Once i got here, I checked a connecter inside the driver's side fender that i remember causing problems with lights before. . .no dice. The only thing I didn't check was whether or not there was a blown fuse. Any ideas?
