Hey All...
I've done some searches and read the FAQ. Good stuff... but I'm not a mechanic and am at a loss at what to do. My girlfriend's S90 had been losing coolant slowly for a long time... kept topping it off with h20 to put the idiot light out... yeesh... I know.
Yesterday, on the fwy... sudden and complete loss of coolant... temp shoots to the top... she got off at the next exit... about a mile. Ouch.
Thermostat replaced... then towed to a indie Volvo shop. They can't find the leak/point of loss. Are running tests, no sign of bad h20 pump... now saying they need the car for the week and the head gaskets are most likely gonna need to be replaced. Preliminary estimate at $1000 - 2000.
I've found from this sight, that the freeze plugs could've gone south... car has 90k miles. Or the head gaskets are worn from the difference in the head and block metals.
If major damage has occured, killing the engine... or even if just the head gaskets 'n' such, with a possible $2000 repair bill... would rebuilt engine be a good alternative? Many places in So. Cal. to get engines rebuilt for cheap... I'd go with a more moderate price to get better results. It just seems that $2000 for just a coolant leak is foolish, when $3000 gets a whole fresh rebuild. Whaddy'all think?
Thanks much.
