I have a 1988 240 which I think is a great car. I think partly what makes it that way is the feel that I get with the rear wheel drive set up. I have noticed that it has been at least seven years since Volvo made a rear wheel drive car. It seems like in going to front wheel drive, they were backing away from competing with cars like BMW and MB, which still use Rear wheel drive. So, I know the reason wasn't competion, but why complety chage all of their cars, to something that is really not good in a lot of respects? I think that they had really good competion against BMW and MB especially with the late 900 series cars. Maybe they they decided that they wanted to compete with VW or some like brand building front wheel drive cars. Seems like the Volvo would have been better off to keep the the 900 or 200 in production, as I'm sure a lot of them would have sold years down the road. Heck, if Volvo reintroduced the 240 as it actually was back in the day, that would be the car I would buy if I was in the market for a new car. It was these rear wheel drive cars that they built there great reputation on. I seriously wonder how long they will last as company building cars that are so similer to Vw's and Subarus. Maybe they will bring the 240 back in a few years like VW did with their bug.
I guess Volvo probably still make good cars, it's just that they arn't the unique box that so many people thought of when they heard the "Volvo"
