Oil breather box/air intake 200 1984

Hey all! I am cleaning the throttle body, vacum hoses, connectors, etc. and now I'm thinking it's a good time to inspect the oil breather box...is this a messy job? I really don't want to lose a bunch of oil or go Exxon-Valdez style over the garage floor...Also, under the intake, there is a bosch part with an electric connector. It has one hose leading to the throttle body and another to the intake manifold. What is it? Since I'm down there anyway, any preventative maintanance ideas? I've been having lousy cold starts. Thanks and happy bricking!
