How to add several images from the gallery to a post ??

Earlier today I tried to add two images to the same post and found that I could not. Clicking on the second image simply replaced the first. I assumed that was just the way it was. Later however there was a post with multiple images from the gallery. How do you do that?? Thanks for your help.
