Idiot Light with New Optima Red Top Battery 200 1989

I bought an Optima Red Top Battery, which has a deep cycle and reduces the risk of discharge, the other day. Before installing it, I checked voltage (12.6 V) with engine off, and with engine on (14.0 V). The idiot/battery light has come on and persists. I have already replaced my alternator before replacing the battery. What's going on?
