Help Pls!
Do I have a lemon?
My 92 960 is troublesome.
Problem #1 Trans lights doing the 960 bling. Error code calls S1 open. Previous owner shows rcpts of S1 replacement months ago at Volvo Dealer. I metered S1 myself and find it 14 ohms. Manual calls 14 ohms and less good. My guess is as trans heats up, the wind blow, the moon passes over, or what ever the reason, the 14 ohm S1 becomes 15 ohms. Any ideas? Possibly related or maybe normal is a relay ratcheting in my dash during shifts. I think it is only overdrive relay but don't know for sure. Anyone know? Is this ratcheting normal? Is ratcheting relay in same curcuit my trans computer is calling S1? Is it possible the computer is calling the wrong switch since Volvo claims they already replaced S1?
Problem #2 Gas Pig. Car seems to drink more than its share of gas particularly in stop and go traffic. Real indicator to me is the Black exhaust pipe and recently I checked the plugs which are black and one doesn't fire anymore. Does anyone know if aftermarket plugs are OK? I bought some Bosh 2 prongers but haven't put them in because don't know if these 960s deal with them well. Presently have Volvo plugs in them which only lasted about 3-4K before one failed. Is this black exhaust pipe normal for these 960s? How about injectors, do they need replacing around the 100K mark? I have been looking at sights for injectors and they are $80+ per so I am not to ambisous to repalce them at $500 for all. What should be done to clean up the milage and stop fowling plugs? Anyone know how to test them externally. My guess would be to apply XYZ fuel pressure and XYZ voltages and observe the pattern. Trouble is, I dont know what is XYZ or how to obtain it easily. How about fuel pressure? Can the pressure be too high, therby causing 960 to be a fuel Pig? Is high pressure a common occurance or is the fail state low pressure?
Problem #3 Tire wear. Car Has recked front tires in under 3K. Outside worn. Drives straight as an arrow, no pull, no other signs. Question is does the front end wear out that quickly? I don't want to get an alignment done if the front end is worn out. Last owner has paperwork from Volvo saying the Rack N Pinion needs replaced. That to me is NUTS. I have never heard of replacing a Rack for any reason other than leakage. Is this a common wearout component? Did a visual on most linkage and all seem good and tight. Tires sit straight and level.
Anyone know what to do with these problems or should I drive it off a cliff?
Thanks,
Randy
