engine does't idle well or at all 700 1989

My 89 740 gle quit while I was stopped at a red light. It started back as soon as I tried it. It seems to be getting progresivly worse, it wouldn't start for me one evening, after driving throughout the day. It would spin over but not fire up. I pulled the fuel pump fuse to check it, it was fine. then I tried it and it started, it was sputtering a lot and the exhaust smelled like it was running very lean.once it smoothed out it ran fine , all but the weak idle. any one with any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
