Grinding noise when coming to a stop 200 1988

The noise is intermitant and only occurs last 5 or 10 MPH when coming to a stop. It is not "rotational" with wheel RPM, more like a high frequency chattering. It's loud and sounds like a stone stuck in the brake pad, but the rotors/pads look fine. The noise has been around for over 6 months. I'm worried something catastrophic could happen.
