motor is racing... 120-130

Recently when I start up my 122/B18 and I'm first starting out, my engine has been acting very strange. It seems prone to racing faster than it should, and then kind of "flutters"/chugs/gasp when put under load. If I hold the gas pedal at just the right pressure, it does fine, but anything past a certain point it starts the flutter/gasp thing. When I then come to a stop sign, the engine is prone to continue racing and doesn't come back down to idle. I've been fiddling with the choke and stomping on the gas pedal a bit to try to kick it out of this pattern, but the whole thing doesn't seem to go away until the car has been running for a while.

The other funny thing is that sometimes the car does just fine, with none of these symptoms, but other times when just starting out it does this strange thing. So far I haven't been able to pick out any pattern in the weather or tempurature outside which would set this off.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks!
