O/D is not functioning properly 200 1982

i have a turbo wagon with the 4 speed stick with o/d. in the morning the overdrive works fine. however when the car is driven for a little while the overdrive light will come on but it does not shift. when i go to cut the overdrive off it acts like it is trying to shift. i clean and check the connection and they seem to be fine. thanks for any help
