Serious question about timing belt replacement prodecure: To wit, when replacing the timing belt on a B230, the consensus on this board is that it's imperative, when removing the front pulley, to either lock the engine at the flywheel while loosening the pulley bolt or use the special Volvo tool. Often I have seen warnings against using an air wrench for removal. So here's the question: Why? What happens with an air wrench that doesn't with another method?
I used to work in a shop (I was general manager -- I make no claims to having the knowledge or skills of a professional mechanic), and I know that every Volvo that received a timing belt had the pulley removed with an air wrench. We did many Volvo timing belts, and we never had a problem.
I'm interested in insight, especially since it's about time to replace the belt on my 87 745.
