740 Turbo Starter Noise 700 1991

Every once in awhile when I start my car the starter grinds. I was going to replace the starter. Is that the first step? Sometimes it sounds like the starter doesn't retract. Starter or something else? Starts fine 85% of the time. How do you feel about a lifetime replacement part? Thanks for helping a new backyard mechanic.
