How to Test ECUs? 200 1989

I checked my Bentley and Haynes manuals. First of all, they're confusing, because it's not clear whether to check the ECU itself or the wiring to the ECU.

Second, the diagrams suggest testing certain numbered leads, but I can't find number on the leads/ECU.
