Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion last week about about checking those 4 engine compartment bolts, crossmember to frame. They don't budge, neither side. I tried with a large prybar and could not losten them with some muscle. Even though you might say it is a good idea to losten and retorque them, They really do seem to be down tight and not the cause of my clunk.
So again, clunk on driver's side, feels like it's down low
(not sure), after many closeup loooks at the bottom control arm bushings, they visually look 100%, no cracking in the robber and aligned at the center. Not those. It's a metal to metal clunk, rubber is ALL there. The fronts are harder to see, but I hear they rarely give clunk grief.
The three control arm mount bolts are nice and tight, torqued as required.
Steering is stiff, bottom bushing and tie rods have no play. Wheel has no play when checked.
Pushing on bumper (to excersice suspension) reveils no clunk.
If I grab hold of the spring, I cannot find any play at the upper mount. If that was the issue, would I feel it this way?
The clunk has been there for over 6 months, typically loud like a steel hammer tapping to the suspension area. It is much more persent on very slow speed, often over even very small road pavement bumps. Higher speed, no issues.
If I strain the suspension by braking, no clunk. When I turn, it's minimized but still there.
Here's one more peice of info: Jackup up the front for oil change this weekend. After dropping the car down again, I had no clunck for the entire weekend! Now it's back. I seem to recall another time where jacking up one side has affected the issue for a short period of time.
Any more thoughts - please? It's driving me crazy. Sometimes it clunks loud at 5 MPH... like there's a gremlin under there with a hammer.
It's an 89 sedan with 255K km (~150K miles)
Thanks in advance,
