Radiator Question 200 1986

Hello:

My daughter recently got a 1986 240DL. It had only 103,000 miles, and is in very nice shape. She had a problem with starting the car after it had been driven and was warmed up, but a visit to a local foreign car/Volvo specialist has fixed the problem.

When the mechanic took the car for a test drive, he noticed the temp guage shot up to hot, stayed there for a minute or two, then went back to normal. He says she needs a new radiator at about $450.00.

Has anyone seen this happen to older Volvos? Is it normal? Is it something to actually worroy about? Would a cooling system flush do any good?

Any input will be very much appreciated.

Thank you.
