intermittent radio reception 900

My '94 945T radio is dropping reception intermittently. It will go from an apparently strong signal to a weak, fuzzy result. There is an audible "pop" when the signal changes and I am thinking it is probably the signal amplifier by the antenna. Has anyone had these symptoms? What was the fix? Is it likely a loose connection or is a replacement in my future? Is there a test I can use to rule the amp out or in as a culprit? Thanks
