I have a 1989 740T w/ auto @ 160K miles. About 5k miles ago, I noticed an exhaust leak between the turbo and the exhaust manifold. A deposit at the joint gave it away. Since then, then gap has grown bigger, and my mechanic tells me I need to repair this ASAP. And I can’t figure out how to visually inspect the car to see what is wrong.
I am looking at doing the repairs myself, and have read the 740 FAQ about this, but I have a few questions that I hope someone can help me with:
Can the bolts be tightened without removing the manifold? if so, how and what wrench can I use to get up in there? Is the increasing gap a sign of loosening bolts (missing keepers?), as I guess? If I undertake it, (and I have rebuilt a couple of engines before) are there any “gotchas” that I need to be aware of? If I have to remove the exhaust manifold, is there any ther work that should be done, as long as I ma in there?
thanks
Rick
