Why are B18 and B 20 valve lash clearances so large? Forgive me, I don't have my Haynes with me for the actual numbers. Looking at it last night, though, I noted that a B-18B is in the .057" range. That seems like a lot! I don't usually make it a point to a rule to argue with the technical writer since I am a technical writer, but, I don't recollect ever having clearances so large. The valve train seems a little noisy (like my 8N Ford tractor).
I remember the old duntov 30-30 cam for small block Chevys was .030 on the intake and exhaust (hence the 30-30).
Can the lash be a little tighter (quieter) and not hurt the little devil or should I just toe the line and enjoy the ride?
I am training my ear for the "right noises" and I want to make sure that I am setting the motor up properly so it makes those "right noises". To make sure that happy clatter I think I hear is, in fact, happy clatter!
