Hello bricksters,
I am having a difficult time with excessive noise from my manual transmission. To me it seems as though an input shaft bearing is going bad but it's just a guess. When I first start driving my car cold in the morning the trans. noise is there but minimal. The longer I drive the louder it seems to get until it reaches it's peak and it's got an associate vibration that increases and decreases with vehicle speed. I had originally assumed the vibration was from somewhere else until I started paying more attention to how and when I notice it.
The noise is present whether I am coasting, under load, in gear, out of gear, in 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th. It is much quieter when I shift into overdrive though the noise is still present. It is accompanied by an incessant tingling vibration on the gearshift and can be felt in the seat esp. if you rest your head on the hard headrest. The sound can be explained as a high whiney sound when going at faster speeds but typically since I like to keep the rpm's low, esp. when downshifting, it sound more like a growling noise from the shift boot area.
I can't figure out if it's a bearing in the trans. orif it's in the overdrive unit but it's driving me nuts. Has anyone dealt successfully with this type of issue? Second, is there anywhere in Oregon that has rebuilt trans/overdrive units or good tested working ones that I could swap mine out for? I just flushed the fluid from the trans. and though there was some metal on the magnet it was not excessive for a car with 224K.
Thanks, Ice
