78 242 GT speedometer not functioning 200 1978

my speedometer in my car is not working and i think i have narrowed it down to the piece that is between the speedometer gear and the cable. not sure what it is but it has a long shaft coming off and then makes a 90 degree joint with the piece that the speedometer cable connects to. what is it? how do i fix it?
