Timing belt change. Used rope trick. Now engine noise is louder. Please, anyone, explain. what happened?

The noise is one that Ive had all along. Most noticeable after driving. Not so much when absolute cold.
The car runs great, but the knocking noise is way more apparent. Before it was mostly heard at idle after warm up. Now its very apparent after just a short drive.
All I did was change the timing belt/front seals. I used the rope in cylinder no.1 to hold the engine still. Is it possible to damage the engine that way?

Theres got to be an explaination for this. something happened. I just want to try to understand this. How could changing the timing belt make it worst?

Thanks

Lawrence

Also, I need to know the best engine to put into this car if I decide to change it. Possibly a 94/95 B230?
