Pulled up in the driveway a few weeks back and the 1984 240 sedan would not start the next day. The darned thing would start out of the blue, run for awhile and die again. I thought I'd exhausted all my mechanical know-how and had it towed to the local Volvo Dealer. It did the same thing for them. They were not real sure what was wrong. Three days later and $278 poorer, I was told it was probably my engine harness. They wanted $2300 so I had it towed home and I pulled the harness myself. I found 4 bad wires but the rest seemed in good shape. The four wires were replaced and the engine started up. I let it run for about 30-minutes and turned it off, it would not start. Seemed to fire every now and then.
External Fuel Pump and filter replaced- I found the small hose on the internal pump in peices at the bottom of the fuel tank. Cleaned up debris and replaced hose pump works normal.
Relays working properly Good pressure to the injectors-
I pulled the # one plug and checked each plugwire for spark. 1&2 had spark 3 & 4 did not. I replaced the coil. I pulled the distributor to check for internal issues (yes I found TDC of the compression stroke). (Volvo /Chrysler Distrib)The impulse generator seemed a little out of whack so I tried straightening it. Put it all back together and I have good spark at all plugs.
I then thought I might be having fuel problems again. The plugs appear wet after cranking. I thought the fuel reg might be bad so I capped the return line to maximize pressure. No help.
I've checked resistance and voltage at all the different locations, mass air sensore, temp sensor (only when cold), Ignition module, fuel relays. Grounds
With all honesty, I think I've tried it all.I seemed to have good spark but I'm not sure if I have good fuel - what else is there - Am I missing something?
