front brake issues on 740 (surprise!) 700 1988

I know it's an old story that's been beaten to death, but the front brakes on the 700 series Volvos sure are a poor design. Otherwise, I love my '88 740 sedan with about 215,000 miles on it, but I've suffered from the perpetual brake issues (mostly pads and rotors) that are so common on these cars. Now, both front Bendix calipers have crapped out, leaving me with some messed-up rotors and a total brake job ahead of me. Now that I have resigned myself to investing in some new brake components, I'm wondering if I have to go back to the same old crappy-type Bendix calipers that will probably start eating pads shortly after installation, or do I have any other options? Can I upgrade to some other style of caliper? Do the Girling ones work better? Are there any calipers with pistons on both the inboard and outboard sides that would fit on my car without major modification? My experience with other vehicles I've owned tells me that this is generally a better design. As long as I have the wheels and brakes torn apart, is there anything else particular that I should look at, fix, replace, or upgrade?
